Kees van Weijen on the role of independent labels | PMI

The Italian Association of Independent Music Producers, PMI, was founded in 2005 and includes more than 120 independent Italian companies, among the most important in the sector, covering over 20% of the market in Italy.

PMI is part of “Confindustria Cultura Italia”, is a signatory of the CCNL and represents the independent Italian record industry on the board of IMPALA, Independent Music Company Association, with which it actively collaborates to give more strength and support to independent companies and bridge the gap between the majors and the independents.

PMI Italia asked – then President of Impala – Kees van Weijen for his view on independent music and the role of an independent label for an artist.

“Being independent is the most exciting thing about working in the record industry. The state of independent music is exciting, because we represent around 40% of the global market. We discover artists and, even if they aren’t successful with their first work, we don’t abandon them.” – Kees van Weijen
